I have just bought myself a new black macbook and I needed to setup my development environment and I thought instead of using MAMP or compiling from source I would try the MacPorts package manager. I installed it fine with a handy installer and then found a tutorial on how to install php5, apache2 and mysql. Unfortunately I kept hitting the same dead end that it was erroring because it could not fetch the jpeg library. In the end you alway come back to MAMP because it actually works. I love the idea of a mac based package manager but I will try a later version and see if I have any more success.
